In order to enhance the learning of our students, we will take purposeful action.  Below are some examples we are considering:

  • Make explicit the meaning of Creative and Critical Thinking
  • Use common language across grades
  • Increase cross-disciplinary integration of ideas
  • Highlight real-life applications for learning
  • Teach critical thinking skills to assess information
  • Develop questioning skills
  • Use checklists for criteria
  • Provide and discuss exemplars for student work
  • Increase use of “I Statements” for student self-assessment
  • Use professional learning time to focus on student portfolios
  • Provide staff collaboration time to share and make plans

After our year-long focus (2017-2018) on Creative and Critical Thinking, we have observed that students are better able to:

  • develop and apply the language of thinking
  • show an understanding that big thinking takes time and is important
  • understand themselves as learners
  • demonstrate a sense of empowerment
  • share ideas and inspire others
  • understand that everyone’s ideas are important and they have a place

In the 2018-2019 school year, we intend to continue our exploration of Creative and Critical Thinking, building on what we have done this year.  We will continue to meet as a staff on a regular basis to share our learning, share observations and assessment on student growth and to plan our next steps. 

Our Goals for 2018-2019

  • continue to build on our understanding of Creative and Critical Thinking
  • use our Outdoor Classroom to support the Thinking Competency
  • create more opportunities to celebrate our students’ learning
  • make our learning visible throughout the school
  • find meaningful ways to communicate student learning to our community
