EDUCATION IS A PARTNERSHIP

Self-Assessment of the Core Competencies

Self-assessment is an important part of the learning process.  Teachers help students develop their skills in this area by providing ongoing opportunities to self-assess and guidance to understand the purpose and process of self-assessment.

Each year, students are required to complete a self-assessment of the Core Competencies, which includes the Thinking Competency we have chosen to focus on as a school.

According to the BC Ministry of Education, students will set goals and gain greater ownership of their learning when they have the opportunity to self-assess and describe who they are as learners, document their progress and share their accomplishments in an ongoing and holistic manner.

The format of self-assessment will vary between ages and classrooms.  Teachers worked collaboratively to develop their own self-assessments and are continually refining the documents over time.

From our self-assessments, we can see that students appear to have a good understanding of their strengths and also their areas for future development.  We should continue to support students in their ability to self-assess, as this skill is necessary for the ownership of student learning.
