Professional Learning Day work with staff

During our January 26th Professional Learning Day, we met with all staff to discuss examples of reading strategies that we taught our students this term and to set goals to improve our students’ reading comprehension for the rest of the school year.  We also took the time to examine the reading resources we have at the school and update our guided reading book and literature circle selections in both French and English.

We met with the whole staff in the afternoon on Professional Learning Day on December 1st. Mr. Pantaleo, our vice principal, presented the school reading assessment data (see attached) to all staff and had everyone discuss their thoughts on the data. Teacher thoughtfully analyzed the data and provided useful input.

We then had each staff member present their reading strategy lesson that they prepared ahead of time on either questioning or inferencing strategy.  In their table groups, we all  discussed the following guiding questions:

  1. Share your lesson

2. What are the commonalities in your resources?

3.What is missing?

4.How do we progress our students’ growth with inferencing?

Our teacher librarian shared books and reading resources on the tables for teachers to access and use to teach these reading strategies.
