Halloween costumes

Students are welcome to dress in a costume, or wear black and orange colours if they wish.

“Trick or Treat” Others with Respect.

Halloween should and needs to be fun; however, we need to be aware that celebrating Halloween needs to be fun for all.   It is important to keep in mind that we need to be sensitive to groups that have been marginalized through mimicry and cultural appropriation during Halloween and other ‘dress up’ events.

It’s good to keep in mind that the following are NOT Costumes:

RACE (black face/brown face)

CULTURE (Indigenous regalia/dreadlocks)

RELIGIOUS FAITH (religious figures/gods/saints/gurus/hijab)

GENDER (gender switching for humour or to mock)

TRAUMA (hangman’s noose/weapons)

Please, do not send your children with masks or accessories that are meant to represent weapons or that feature blood/gore.  This is frightening for younger students and we want all students to enjoy the excitement of the day.  Thank you.

McMath Secondary School Halloween Candy Collection

This upcoming Halloween season McMath School leadership team is working with The Good Shepherd Ministry to help provide some assistance to those living on the downtown east side. We are asking various elementary schools in Richmond to help us collect pre-packaged candy that will be gifted to those in need. (We will not be collecting any additional donations this year, only pre-packaged candy).

The Leadership Team at McMath will be dropping off collection bins in front of Diefenbaker main office during the week of Oct. 20th and picking up the donations the week of Nov. 10th. Thank you for your generosity and support!

Have a great long weekend,

Ms. Vosahlo and Mr. Pantaleo
