Cardboard Challenge
Several classes held their own Cardboard Challenge after being inspired by the short film, "Caine's Arcade," and by the website, "imagination.org". In a Cardboard Challenge, kids of all ages are invited to build anything they can dream up using cardboard, recycled materials and imagination.
Our Cardboard Challenge is a powerful opportunity to foster creativity and collaboration through playful learning. Students planned, created, and played with the question, "What might you create using cardboard?" At the end of the process, students were asked to reflect on the experience and to share their creative and critical thinking skills.
Students found the process exciting and engaging, taking their project from an idea to a finished product. Students' ability to reflect on the process and their learning is increasing with the help of guiding questions and teacher support.
Big Ideas:
- Designs grow out of natural curiosity. Designs can be improved with prototyping and testing.
- Skills can be developed through play, practice, effort, and action.
- Effective Collaboration relies on clear, respectful communication.
Learning Intentions:
- I can use materials, tools, and technologies in a safe manner.
- I can get new ideas or build on other people's ideas, to create new things.
- I can build the skills I need to make my ideas work, and usually succeed, even if it takes a few tries.
- I can work with others to achieve a common goal; I do my share.
Reflection:
• What worked well in your planning/creating/collaborating?
• What does this piece reveal about you as a learner?
• What did you learn about yourself as you worked on this piece?
• What challenges did you face?
• What would you change if you had the chance to do this activity again?
• What is one thing you have seen in your classmates' work/process that might inspire you for next time?
