Class reviews

During the first week of November, we met with each division classroom and resource teacher to discuss strengths and goals of their classes overall and in the area of our school story goal literacy, more specifically in reading and reading comprehension.

Classroom teachers shared data that they collected on each student's reading comprehension ability.  For each student who is emerging or developing in their reading comprehension, we collectively developed intervention plan for this school year.

Interventions include: targeted individual, small group or whole class  instruction in reading strategies found in Learn 38 Pillars of Literacy: making connections, predicting, summarizing, inferencing etc. For younger students, strategies include: literacy centres, sound soup, shared group reading (noticing sounds), labelling pictures with sounds, story and writer's workshop, letter and sound games, sight word games, frame starts, poems and alien words.

Data was collated on one school-wide spreadsheet and will be examined again during spring assessment, when we can compare and see students' growth and improvement in reading comprehension over time.
